SmartBrake comes in three variants
Do you want to be able to brake your child's bike from a distance? Do you or a loved one struggle to grip a traditional brake lever? Or do you want to ensure that the bike stops automatically if the rider becomes unconscious? We have solutions for all these needs.
The solution for a weak grip
Increased safety if you become unconscious
Hybrid
The perfect companion brake
Cycling requires a lot of attention to your surroundings. Children learning to cycle, or people with reduced cognitive function, often have challenges reading traffic.
SmartBrake HYBRID is designed for those who can use a traditional brake lever but need an attendant-controlled brake.
A wireless remote control is a safe and subtle way to provide security. This gives the rider increased independence and sense of mastery, as well as enjoyment from active participation.
Wireless
The solution for a weak grip
Developed for cyclists who need a soft brake handle with minimal resistance to be able to brake themselves.
Wireless brakes enable children and adults with cognitive or physical disabilities to brake independently or be assisted during the activity.
Switch
Increased safety if you become unconscious
Cycling promotes health and independence, but can be challenging for people with seizures such as epilepsy.
SmartBrake SWITCH makes cycling safer by stopping the bike automatically when the brake lever is released.
This allows people with epilepsy to cycle without fear of losing control during a seizure, so they can continue to be active with confidence.
Frequently asked questions
SmartBrake is an advanced electronic brake system designed for bicycles (2, 3, or 4 wheels). It uses a hydraulic brake caliper (disc or rim) that is activated by an electric servomotor. The system is controlled wirelessly via RF/Bluetooth from different remotes, including a hand controller, thumb trigger remote, and brake lever remote.
SmartBrake is completely wireless and operated via Bluetooth/RF signals. It offers smooth electronic braking and allows users to brake using remotes, which is especially beneficial for adaptive sports or cyclists with limited hand functionality. It also includes a fail-safe system, which automatically applies the brakes if the signal is interrupted or lost.
Yes, SmartBrake is delivered as a complete braking kit, fully bled and ready to install. Remove the old braking system you want to replace and install SmartBrake. We recommend to keep a second independent braking system to maximise safety during use.
When ordering SmartBrake you need to state which lengths you need, to place the cables as you want it. You will receive custom lengths to your requirements.
Yes, you don't have to turn on the SmartBrake Hybrid to use the Magura Brake Lever. To use the hand control you have to turn SmartBrake on.
Installation should be done by a professional mechanic as it requires proper setup of the hydraulic brake system, and incorrect installation can be dangerous. The product manual includes a step-by-step guide, but professional expertise is recommended.
Yes, SmartBrake supports different types of calipers, including Tektro Auriga Twin (hydraulic disc brake) and Magura MT5 and HS11 (hydraulic rim brakes). These variations ensure it can be adapted for different types of bicycles/tricycles and user needs.
SmartBrake has a built-in Fail-Safe feature. If the signal between the remote and the brake unit is lost, or if the battery is low, the system automatically applies the brakes. Additionally, the user is always advised to have a second independent braking system to maximise safety during use.
The range depends on the specific remote being used:
- Hand Control: up to 30 metres
- Brake Lever: up to 20 metres
- Thumb Brake: up to 20 metres
Signal range may vary depending on interference and obstacles.
- The brake unit and the lever have rechargeable batteries, which can be charged using the provided charger.
- The thumb brake and hand control use CR2032 batteries.
- It is recommended to charge after every 4th trip, or when the battery level drops below 25%.
- The system will enter Safety Brake Mode if the battery is critically low.
Yes, SmartBrake components are designed to withstand wet weather conditions. However, it is important not to submerge them in water or use high-pressure water to clean them. Ensure the charging port is sealed properly to prevent water damage.
This may happen due to:
- Dirty or worn brake pads
- Oil leakage or air in the hydraulic hose If this occurs, clean the brake pads and calipers, and check for leaks. Contact a professional mechanic if the problem persists.
- Ensure the battery is charged regularly to avoid deep discharge, which can damage the battery.
- Avoid exposing the system to extreme temperatures or magnetic objects.
- Clean the product with a soft cloth and neutral detergent, avoiding harsh solvents.
- Regularly inspect the hydraulic cables and brake pads for wear and tear.
Yes, firmware updates can be done using the nRF Toolbox App. Connect the brake system to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth to update and customise your SmartBrake components. Instructions for updates are available on the SmartBrake website.
If any of the remotes or brake units run out of battery, the SmartBrake will activate its fail-safe system, applying the brakes automatically. You will need to charge the system or replace the battery to continue riding safely with the use of the hand control. The Magura brake lever will still be functional.
It takes approximately 3.5 hours to fully charge the brake unit
