Guide

Getting started with SmartBrake for technicians

This guide is for technicians, dealers and installers preparing SmartBrake for use. It must be used together with the instructions for use for the relevant product version.

  • identifying the setup
  • installing the brake system
  • mounting the SmartBrake unit
  • mounting controllers
  • pairing when needed
  • adjusting the brakes
  • final checks before delivery

1. Identify the SmartBrake setup

Before starting, confirm:

  • Hybrid or Wireless
  • Rim, Single Disc or Twin Disc
  • which controllers are included

Hybrid or Wireless

If the package includes a physical brake lever connected to the SmartBrake brake unit, it is a Hybrid system. If the setup only uses wireless controllers, it is a Wireless system.

Rim or Disc

If the brake acts directly on the rim, it is a Rim setup.
If the brake uses a brake disc, it is a Disc setup.

Single Disc or Twin Disc

One caliper = Single Disc.
Two calipers = Twin Disc.

Hybrid system: See the physical lever in the centre of the image connected through a splitter to the rim brake and brake unit.

Wireless system: Only wireless SmartBrake brake controllers are connected to the brake unit.

The brake unit is connected to a single disc brake. Often referred to as Single Disc.

The brake unit is connected to two disc brakes through a splitter arrangement, called Twin Disc. The calipers are often mirrored, but the design varies between bicycle makes.

2. Check all parts

Unpack the system and check that all relevant parts are included before starting installation.

The included controllers are already paired.

3. Prepare the bicycle

Remove the existing brake system that SmartBrake will replace.
Keep track of the parts you remove and check that the mounting points are compatible before proceeding.

Example image: Remove the cable-operated rim brake caliper

Also remove the brake lever connected to the caliper being removed.

4. Install the SmartBrake brake system

Install the supplied brake system for the correct setup:

  • Rim
  • Single Disc
  • Twin Disc
  • Hybrid lever, if included

Plan the hydraulic hose routing before securing everything permanently.

The video shows how to install the Magura HS11 rim brake on the bicycle

Routing tips

  • follow the frame as closely as possible
  • avoid sharp bends
  • avoid moving parts
  • avoid interfering with steering
  • avoid loose external loops that could snag

5. Mount the SmartBrake unit

Position the SmartBrake unit where it is:

  • protected
  • easy to access for charging
  • clear of pedals and steering
  • suitable for tidy hose routing
  • at least 15 cm from a bicycle battery

The brake unit can be mounted in any position — upside down or sideways. Where possible, it is often positioned at the rear of the bicycle. This is because of the brake lights, which also indicate to the companion that the brake is being activated remotely from a distance.

The bracket can be rotated for universal mounting

Use the supplied UV-resistant cable ties for mounting. If needed, placing rubber beneath the cable ties may improve grip. This is not included.

6. Mount the controller(s)

Mount the controller in a stable, ergonomic position for the cyclist or companion. The Hand Controller is supplied loose together with the instruction booklet and charger.

7. Pair only when needed

Most included controllers are already paired. Only pair if:

  • the controller was supplied separately
  • the controller does not connect correctly
  • troubleshooting indicates that pairing is needed

Follow the pairing procedure in the user manual for your product and configuration. Contact SmartGroup if the procedure is unclear.

8. Adjust the brakes

Before delivery, adjust the brake pads as close to the disc or rim as possible without rubbing.

If the brake pads are too far away, SmartBrake needs more travel to move them towards the brake disc or rim before braking begins. This causes a slower response and weaker braking. For the best possible operation, the gap should therefore be as small as possible without the pads rubbing.

The video shows how the pads can be adjusted closer by changing the pressure in the hose on the Hybrid kit.

9. Carry out final checks

Always perform:

  • a static braking test
  • a low-speed test
  • a hard-stop test in a safe area

If the brake is slow or weak, adjust and test again before delivering the bicycle.
