RollerSafe: roller skis with wireless brake operation

RollerSafe is a roller-ski system with wireless brake operation. This article describes its functions and considerations before use.
What is RollerSafe?
RollerSafe is a roller-ski system with wireless operation of a hydraulic brake.
RollerSafe provides brake operation in situations that roller-skiers may find demanding:
- when speed increases
- when the surface varies
- when you need to apply the brakes
How RollerSafe braking works
RollerSafe provides brake operation during roller-skiing using a trigger mounted on the pole.
The system has three main components:
- A wireless brake trigger mounted on the pole
- A receiver on the roller ski that receives the signal
- A hydraulic pump that activates the brake
When you press the brake trigger on the pole, it sends a wireless radio-frequency signal to the ski. This signal starts a hydraulic pump, which applies braking directly to the wheel rim.
RollerSafe uses specially designed wheels, where the rim acts as a brake disc.
In addition, the rubber compound in the wheels is designed for use with braking.

Who might consider RollerSafe?
People considering RollerSafe should assess the intended activity and setup:
Beginners should receive instruction in roller-skiing technique and equipment operation.
Recreational skiers can explore whether roller skis with brakes suit their planned activity.
Experienced skiers can assess the setup in relation to the route, activity and controls.
Clubs and coaches need to plan instruction and activities around the participants and equipment.
Planning a roller-skiing session
Plan the route, surface and session according to experience and available equipment.
During a roller-skiing session, people may choose to:
- stop and take their skis off or put them on before or after slopes
- walk down slopes instead of rolling
- take breaks at junctions and exposed sections
Breaks and route selection should be adapted to each session.
Situations to consider when choosing equipment
Consider how the equipment will be operated in different situations:
- Downhill sections: Consider speed, technique and brake operation.
- Junctions and traffic: Plan your route and follow applicable traffic rules.
- Rough asphalt or uneven surfaces: Assess whether the surface is suitable for the activity.
- Training alone: Plan the activity and route according to your own skills.
- Training plans and any adaptations should be assessed individually.

Why was RollerSafe developed?
Roller-skiing involves choices about speed, braking and route selection. These considerations informed the development of RollerSafe.
RollerSafe provides an alternative way to operate a roller-ski brake.
Availability at publication: temporarily out of stock, new version in development
RollerSafe is temporarily out of stock because several main components are currently unavailable. We are working on an updated version of RollerSafe.
We have no confirmed launch date yet, but 2027 is the earliest expectation.
