Guide
Adaptive cycle accessories and brake adaptations
Do you have an adapted cycle that needs different brake controls, or are you looking for tricycle accessories? Start with what the rider wants to do and what is difficult about the current setup. A different lever, a change in control position and a companion-operated brake address different tasks.
Match the adaptation to the task
- Reach: Are the fingers too far from the lever, or is the hand position awkward? Ask for the control position and available adjustments to be assessed.
- Grip: Is the lever within reach but difficult to operate? Have both the condition of the brake and the method of control assessed.
- Companion support: Does another person need to help with braking? Clarify roles, controls and the limits of the complete setup.
- Seating and other equipment: Note the seat, handlebars, supports and pedals. A change in one area can affect the space available for a brake control.
GripAdapt concerns the position of a compatible brake lever. SmartBrake is a separate system for electronic brake control. A lever adapter and an electronic braking system are not different names for the same product.

Identify the cycle type and exact model
A two-wheeled cycle, an upright tricycle, a recumbent tricycle and a tandem have different layouts. Include the full model name, model year if known and the brakes currently fitted. Two cycles from one manufacturer may require different components and assessments.
Identify the cycle before asking about adaptations
The examples below show how to distinguish make, model and cycle type. The information comes from manufacturers’ own pages and documents. Mentioning a cycle does not mean SmartGroup supplies it, has an agreement with its manufacturer or has confirmed compatibility with SmartBrake or GripAdapt.
Schuchmann momo tricycle
Schuchmann presents the momo tricycle with a choice of handlebars, saddles and pedals. When asking about brake accessories for a momo, include its size and existing controls. The availability of accessories for the model family does not establish compatibility with a particular SmartBrake setup.

Van Raam Easy Rider
Van Raam describes the Easy Rider as an adult tricycle. Use the manufacturer and model name to identify the cycle, including its version. Easy Rider and Sunrise Easy are different product families. SmartGroup has no supplier agreement with Van Raam; this is an example of model identification only.

Sunrise Medical Easy
Sunrise Medical’s Easy order form covers Easy 16, 20, 22 and 26. It concerns a two-wheeled family with accessory options. Specify the exact model and the brakes actually fitted, rather than referring only to an “Easy cycle”.

Tomcat and SmartBrake
Tomcat has a public Smart Brake product page: a concrete example of a cycle manufacturer describing the system. That page also identifies model exceptions. It does not establish that every Tomcat cycle or older configuration can be adapted in the same way. Confirm the current model and product version with the supplier.

An example of a useful enquiry
Imagine a family that already owns a tricycle. The child can reach the brake, but the family wants a companion to be able to operate it too. The enquiry should explain the companion’s role and show the existing brakes, rather than simply request a new lever. This is an illustrative scenario, not a confirmed installation on a particular model.
- Make, model, size and model year if known.
- Photographs of the cycle, brake lever and brakes without people or sensitive information.
- What is difficult: reach, grip, control position or the need for companion operation.
- Equipment already fitted and who can help with installation and a trial.
The brand examples help identify a cycle. They are not a list of confirmed partnerships, dealerships or approved SmartBrake combinations. Manufacturer sources were checked on 5 November 2026.
