Practical guide

Common bicycle brake systems: what do you have?

Understand rim and disc brakes, cable and hydraulic operation, and what to identify before asking about a brake adaptation.

Two different questions: brake type and operation

A brake can be described by where it acts and how the lever operates it. Rim brakes act on the wheel rim; disc brakes act on a rotor near the hub. Cable-operated and hydraulic describe how force is transmitted from the lever. These categories are not interchangeable: MAGURA HS is an example of a hydraulic rim brake.

Look beyond “disc” or “rim”

A general brake category does not establish whether an adapter, lever or assisted control will fit. Record the bicycle and brake model before selecting components. A hub or coaster brake is another arrangement; ask a mechanic to identify it if the type is unclear.

  • Photograph the complete bicycle, both brake assemblies and the levers.
  • Record brand and model markings without dismantling the brake.
  • Identify which controls operate which wheels with the cycle supplier.
  • Describe whether the difficulty is reach, hand effort, control position or companion operation.

Reaching the lever is a separate issue

Some levers include a reach adjustment, but its availability and adjustment procedure depend on the model. SHIMANO documents this feature for the ST-R7120. That is not evidence that every lever has the same adjustment, or that bringing a lever closer reduces the hand force required.

Before modifying a brake

Ask a qualified cycle mechanic to check the existing system and the manufacturer’s instructions. Changes must be assessed as a complete setup, including the lever, brake, mounts and intended riding situation. This overview identifies questions to ask; it is not an installation or braking lesson.

Where SmartGroup fits

GripAdapt concerns lever position on compatible configurations. SmartBrake provides alternative brake controls in specified configurations. Neither product should be selected from a brake category alone. Share the model and photographs so compatibility and the intended controls can be discussed.
